Costa Rica Facts – Some Unique!

As per the Costa Rica trivia it has been referred to as the "Switzerland of the Americas" as well as the "Jewel of the Caribbean". This is because of the wonderfully scenery found there. Costa Rica is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean though the former side has more cultural diversity. toucan_006_copierb_s_

It is an interesting fact that until 1852 the nation of Costa Rica had no equivalent of a national anthem. Mr. Manuel Maria Gutiérrez was asked to create the music of the national anthem by the then president of Costa Rica, Mr. Juan Rafael Mora. The lyrics to the anthem were writing in 1903 by Mr. José María Zeledón. There have been no known modifications to the lyrics since that time and Costa Rica declared this music as its national anthem in 1949.

The flag of Costa Rica is as interesting as its national anthem. Before the current flag came into use, Costa Rica used 3 flags to represent itself. The Independent Provincial Flag (1823), the Joined Provinces of Central America Flag (1824-40), and the Flag of the Free State of Costa Rica (1840-48). The official flag of the Republic of Costa Rica was declared by the Mr. José María Zeledón administration in 1848. Since then there have been some minor modifications to the flag but it is essentially the same one. The flag comprises of 5 horizontal stripes (from top: 1 blue, 1 white, 1 red stripe of double size, 1 white, and a blue stripe again). CostaRicanMystery

The shield of Costa Rica also dates from 29 September 1848. On this date Costa Rica created its 6th shield. There were three modifications to this shield and the resulting one, the 9th, was declared official and remains in use till date. The shield serves as a representation of the 7 provinces through 7 stars, the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans on the shield are divided by light green mountains that represent the Mountain Range in that country.
